Sign Painter
Casual Lettering

At this play day, Andrew will teach you the basics of a Sign Painter Casual style using a flat brush and water-based paint. Casual (also commonly known as “speed style” or “speed stroke”) is a style of brush lettering used by sign painters to quickly lay out and letter elements of a sign. This type of lettering is meant to reflect the individual style of the painter but still conform to traditional letterforms and techniques.
During this class you’ll learn brush handling, basic strokes and shading as well as some tips for making this style your own.
- This play day is suitable for beginners, some prior calligraphy experience is encouraged.
- The event has a $10 supply fee. RSVP is required to secure your spot.
- Basic supplies needed: pencil, ruler, eraser. Optional: mahl stick if you already have one. Optional: slant board or easel.
Supply fee includes a 1/4" Mack flat brush, small container of Dick Blick premium tempera paint, and practice sheets which attendees may keep.
Andrew will have some mahl sticks available to try during the play day. He will also have Mack brushes for sale at wholesale prices individually ($4-14) and in sets of four brushes ($34). The size range of brushes is from 1/4" to 1".
